I am a newly converted vegan. And an ultra marathoner. Rings a bell? There are many like me in this sport and the greatest of them all is the legendary Scott Jurek. So, I am in the ‘vegan ultrarunner‘ league now.

I converted to a vegan for 2 reasons. One, I wanted to lose weight and second, I wanted to improve my performance. The second reason is directly proportional to the first reason. Less weight equals to faster timings. Wait, there is a third reason too. That is to bulletproof my immune system. It always takes a hit whenever I increase my mileage.
Being a vegan means that apart from not eating eggs, meat and fish, I am not supposed to consume milk, honey, cheese, butter, ghee and mayonnaise. Did I miss anything else? People ask me nowadays what do I eat then? Fruits and vegetables and other whole foods, duh!
I will come straight to the point. What do I eat for breakfast now? If you had been watching my YouTube videos, then you will know what I am eating for breakfast for last 6 weeks or so. However, I decided to pen it down for those who don’t enjoy watching me.

There are myriad options for a vegan breakfast, however, I decided to go for the present one. And I know I will continue it for quite sometime in future. My breakfast contains the following-
Fresh fruits – Bananas, mangoes, pineapple, grapes, papaya, musk melon.
Nuts – Walnuts, unsalted peanuts, almonds, cashew nuts.
Berries – Cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, plum.
Seeds – Chia seeds.

My breakfast bowl contains approximately 1000 “amazingly good” calories. The quantities of the above items are given below.
Generally a couple of bananas, one mango or handful of cut pineapple or papaya or musk melon or a bunch of grapes. I don’t eat more than 3 fruits at one go. The taste otherwise gets spoiled. But I like the combo of bananas and mangoes.
A handful of mixed nuts. I crush the walnuts, cashew nuts while putting them in the bowl . No specific reason for that.
A generous scope from the peanut butter jar. Somehow I love the taste of it combined with a banana. It’s heaven!
A handful of cranberries or blackberries or blueberries and one plum. They are like the icing on the cake.
I sprinkle on a spoonful of raw chia seeds for its benefits only. I hate the sight of soaked chias though.
I love the taste of chocolate soy milk. Earlier I had the plain one and it tasted horrible but chocolate flavour is so yumm!
It doesn’t take more than 5 minutes to cut and mix them in a bowl and doesn’t require any prior preparations. The breakfast is quite filling and satiating. And all the sweetness of the fruits gives such a great feeling at the start of the day. A day started with some unadulterated goodness of nature. With all the macro and micro nutrients, this bowl of awesomeness is simply amazing.
The whole meal totals up close to 1000 calories, which will not lead to weight gain. I have lost 4 kilograms in last 6 weeks of being a vegan and my energy levels stay consistent throughout the day. And, touch wood, I haven’t yet suffered a single bout of allergy due to the increased mileage in my training. Go to Training tab to get an update on how my training for this year’s ultra marathon is going.
Initially, for few days, you will feel bloated after having this breakfast but this sensation will go away with time. And you will keep thinking of food and having the feeling of being hungry all the time. But now even on my cheat days, I prefer to have this as my breakfast. At max, as an alternative, I will have a bowl of Poha or flattened rice.

Having this fruits only breakfast helped me in maintaining my energy levels throughout the day. Now, there are no energy dips which I used to experience earlier. And yes, I have got compliments of glowing skin!
Here are a couple of videos where I am making or having this breakfast bowl. Check it out.

This is nowadays my “go to” breakfast. I am simply in love with this concept of breakfast. I will continue having it till I get bored of it or find some other alternative.
Till then stay fit and keep running.
